 Women, Infants & Children ( WIC ) Nutrition Services

Women, Infants, & Children (WIC) is a supplemental food and nutrition program. WIC provides food, nutrition counseling, breastfeeding promotion and support, and access to health services to eligible low-income women, infants, and children. The WIC services are provided through the Brunswick County Health Department.

Who WIC Serves

The WIC target population are low-income, nutritionally at risk:

  • Pregnant women (through pregnancy and up to 6 weeks after birth or after pregnancy ends).
  • Breastfeeding women (up to infant’s 1st birthday)
  • Nonbreastfeeding postpartum women (up to 6 months after the birth of an infant or after pregnancy ends)
  • Infants (up to 1st birthday).
  • Children up to their 5th birthday.

To be eligible to participate these persons must:

  • Live in North Carolina.
  • Have a household income less than 185% of the U.S. Poverty Income Guidelines. A person receiving Medicaid, Work First Families Assistance (TANF), or Food Stamps automatically meets the income eligibility requirement.
  • Be at nutritional risk. A nutritionist or other health professional makes the nutritional risk assessment at no cost to the participant, usually at the local WIC office.

WIC Services Provided

  • Nutrition Education and Counseling
  • Referrals to Public or Private Health Care Providers and Social Services
  • Breastfeeding Promotion and Support
  • Nutritious Foods

Foods for Infants (Birth-12 months):

  • Infant Formula – iron-fortified
  • Infant Cereal – iron-fortified and low in sugar
  • Juice – 100% unsweetened

Foods for Women and Children:

  • Milk - includes nonfat/fat free/skim, reduced/low fat, or whole
  • Cereal - iron-fortified and low in sugar
  • Juice - 100% unsweetened
  • Cheese - includes low fat, low cholesterol, and low sodium
  • Dried Beans and Peas - unflavored
  • Peanut Butter - includes low sugar, low sodium
  • Eggs - not allowed: "cholesterol reducing" or "specialty" eggs

Additional foods for women who solely breastfeed:

  • Tuna - chunk light in water
  • Carrots - plain (fresh, canned or frozen)

*The Bolivia WIC office will be closed daily from 12:30 PM – 1:00 PM for lunch.

The Bolivia office is located at the Health Department in the Government Complex on 25 Courthouse Drive.
