Special Olympics is a national and worldwide competition that features athletes with mental retardation (or closely-related developmental disabilities). The local program, The Special Olympics Of North Carolina,
1) gives athletes an opportunity to develop physical fitness,
demonstrate courage, experience joy in competition, and participate in
the sharing of gifts, skills, and friendship with their families, other
athletes, and the community; 2) gives spectators a chance to cheer on
these athletes who train throughout the year; 3) gives volunteers the
opportunity to share in the experience, as they assist the athletes and
competition organizers in presenting a wonderful event.
