Control Officer

As part of our comprehensive Solid Waste Management Program, Brunswick County takes great strides in identifying, assisting in cleaning up and stopping illegal dumps. Illegal dumpsites are very unattractive and can sometimes contain hazardous material that is harmful to people, animals and the environment.

Illegal dumping is a criminal offense in the State of North Carolina. Brunswick County's Solid Waste Enforcement Officer investigates illegal dumps, illegal burning, littering and uncovered loads throughout the county. The officer investigates complaints from concerned citizens and law enforcement officials alike, and has the authority to issue citations for violations.

Some of Brunswick County’s most problematic areas for illegal dumping are along the back roads of our county. The County’s Solid Waste Control Officer has discovered illegal dumps containing hundreds of tires, stoves, refrigerators, couches and televisions along our roadways. It is important that residents know they can bring many of these discarded items to the Brunswick County Landfill at no cost. Landowners are ultimately responsible for the cleanup of dumpsites; however, trash from an illegal dump site is searched by the Solid Waste Control Officer for evidence that may lead to the individual who committed the offense.

Report an Illegal Dump

To report illegal dumping, call the Solid Waste Enforcement Officer at (910) 253-2523 or email jopotter@brunsco.net. Please provide the location of the site, vehicle type and color, Tag #, the time and date seen, and any further information about the people in the vehicle.

Swat-A-North Carolina Litterbug

Littering North Carolina roadways is not acceptable behavior! Some people simply need to be informed and reminded that littering, whether deliberate or unintentional, can end with their own personal commitment to stop. The Swat-A-Litterbug Program is an educational effort administered by the Office of Beautification Programs within the North Carolina Department of Transportation that tracks down litterbugs through license plates.

In order to reach out to those who litter, each citizen is asked to assist in an educational effort to ensure a cleaner and safer North Carolina roadway system. You can do your part by reporting litterbugs to the Office of Beautification Programs at 1-800-331-5864 or online at Swat a Litter Bug, or contact the Solid Waste Control Officer directly at (910) 253-2523.
