Veteran’s Day is fast approaching and this year many are watching the Ken Burns Vietnam War documentary series on PBS. Although a significant event in American history, many today know little about the Vietnam War. The Vietnam War, which premiered on September 17th and is comprised of 10 episodes, “tells the epic story of one of the most consequential, divisive, and controversial events in American history as it has never before been told on film.”

  • What are your memories of the Vietnam War?
  • How were you or your family affected?
  • Do you have letters, photographs or keepsakes from any relatives or friends who were involved?
  • What was the impact of the war on your or their lives?

Our moderator, Jack Heslin, spent two tours in Vietnam, 1967-68 & 1971-72, both of which were in the Central Highlands operating out of Camp Holloway in Pleiku. His experience as a helicopter pilot and operations officer during the Easter Offensive of 1972 in Kontum Province provided him with first-hand experience & many insights relating to the military operations of that period.

Jack launched his website www.thebattleofkontum.com on March 30, 2002, the 30th anniversary of the Vietnam Easter Offensive of 1972. After all these years, it is his hope that some of the insights gained during this period will be of use to others and may provide a better understanding of this battle.  His website is his effort to commemorate those few Americans who stayed and fought the battle with the South Vietnamese, especially the aviators who did extraordinary things in a battle most Americans never heard of.
