NCDOT: Roadway Improvements Start Monday for Section of U.S. 74/76 in Brunswick County

Work to Upgrade the Road to Interstate Standards

WILMINGTON – Roadway improvement work that starts next week means drivers on U.S. 74/76, eight miles east of the Columbus County line, need to be ready for intermittent lane closures. A contractor for the Department of Transportation is widening lanes, installing rumble strips and repaving the road between I-140 and Pineland Road.

Road widening will make the road safer and provide more room for larger commercial vehicles. Rumble strips, which are typically installed outside the travel lanes, let drivers know if they are unintentionally leaving the roadway. Repaving improves both traction and ride quality on the road, which is especially important during rain and snow events.

The closures will take place between 6 a.m. and 4 p.m., Sunday through Friday, from Feb. 27 through Dec. 16, 2017.

No detours are required, however; motorists are advised to use caution while traveling in the area and to expect possible delays at times. NCDOT also reminds motorists to stay alert and obey the posted speed limit while traveling through the work zone.
