The Last of Us
Craig Mazin and Neil Duckman
Review by: Riley M.
Genre: Action, Adventure
What is it about?
A fungal virus of cordyceps spread to people originally in big cities, but then spread everywhere else. In the world there are mainly two factions of people, The Fireflies and a government body who put up quarantine zones. The factions of Fireflies are in a rebellion against the government for freedom from them as they have a tight control on resources and refuse to let people out of their zones. The main plot of the story takes place 20 years after the initial outbreak with a smuggler and a girl who the Fireflies think is important, she finds out that she is important as she has the cure to the virus.
Who are the main characters? Tell us about them.
Joel is a smuggler, which means he can get out of the quarantine zones, who is looking for his brother Tommy. Joel was trying to get out of the city on the night of the outbreak and as a result he ended up losing his daughter to a wary soldier trying to control the crowds. He is considered abrasive and not very good at expressing his emotions, he misses his daughter deeply, which is why he trying to find Tommy, as family needs to stick together. Ellie is a 14 year old girl who has the cure to the virus, she is an orphan as her mother died giving birth to her, the Fireflies think she is important even though they don't know that she has the cure to the virus. Ellie is very eager to learn from Joel and loves corny jokes, especially from joke books.
Does this remind you of anything else you have read, watched, or listened to?
The intro reminds me of the Daredevil intro sequence, which would make sense as they were made by the same person.
What originally made you interested in this media?
The series is based on a video game of the same title, but I'd also heard good things about the cinematography.
Did you like this media? Would you recommend it to others? Why or why not?
Yes, I would definitely recommend this other people. The cinematography is really well done, the story is a bit different than the video game, so if you've played the game, you won't know the entire story.
What type of person might you recommend this to?
Someone who likes found family, but is also not afraid to get their feelings hurt.
Do you have any final thoughts you would like to include?
Be prepared for heartbreak. Without giving any spoilers, this will definitely make you cry if you end up getting attached to the characters (which you definitely will!).
