[ARCHIVED] Brunswick County, City of Southport Address Questions About HB 911, Projects Within Southport ETJ

News Flash_Joint Media Release_Southport

MEDIA RELEASE

BOLIVIA, N.C. – With the recent passage and ratification of North Carolina House Bill 911 concerning the Southport Extraterritorial Planning Jurisdiction (ETJ), both Brunswick County and the City of Southport have received several questions from residents and the development community about how this bill will impact properties and development projects within this ETJ.

Under HB 911, the North Carolina General Assembly has taken action to remove the Southport ETJ. All properties in this area will fall under the jurisdiction of Brunswick County and the Brunswick County Planning Board effective July 1, 2024.

Until otherwise directed, all approved projects or projects currently in the application phase within the Southport ETJ area should continue to contact the City of Southport concerning any planning or permitting needs.

Brunswick County and the City of Southport are coordinating to identify impacted projects and plan steps to transfer these projects to the County’s jurisdiction as seamlessly as possible.

Both the County and the City will provide more direction to residents and the development community on when to begin coordinating with Brunswick County for project applications and permitting as soon as these details are finalized.
