MEDIA RELEASE

BOLIVIA, N.C. – The Brunswick County Board of Commissioners met for a regular meeting this Monday, July 8, 2024.

Below is a quick recap of the actions taken on selected agenda items during the regular meeting. Residents can view the full agenda and accompanying reports and subscribe to agenda notifications on the Brunswick County Agendas and Minutes Portal.

Brunswick County live streamed these meetings via Zoom and will post the meeting replay on the County’s YouTube channel. Individuals are invited to share feedback on the live stream quality and experience to the Communications Department via email.

This was the only regular Board of Commissioners meeting scheduled for July 2024. The next regular meeting is scheduled for Monday, Aug. 5 at 3 p.m.

 V. Approval of Consent Agenda

The Board of Commissioners unanimously approved the consent agenda as presented. The full list of the approved consent agenda items is available on the Brunswick County Agendas and Minutes Portal

VI. Presentations

  1. Clerk to the Board – Presentation from Boys and Girls Club of Southeast NC: The Board received a presentation from Hilsyn Hardy of the Boys and Girls Club of Southeast NC. No action was taken.
     
  2. Planning – Proposed Brunswick County Unified Development Ordinance Text Amendments Related to Trees, Landscaping, and Greenspace: The Board received information on the Brunswick County Unified Development Ordinance text amendments related to trees, landscaping, and greenspace. No action was taken. The Board directed staff to continue to review and discuss the proposed text amendments with members of the development community and to readdress the item during the Aug. 19 regular meeting (tentative). 
     
  3. Planning – Proposed Brunswick County Unified Development Ordinance Text Amendment Related to Adding a Transportation Overlay Zone: The Board received information on the Brunswick County Unified Development Ordinance text amendment related to adding a Transportation Overlay Zone (TOZ). No action was taken. The Board directed staff to continue to review and discuss the proposed text amendment with members of the development community and to readdress the item during the Aug. 19 regular meeting (tentative).

VII. Board Appointments

  1. Clerk to the Board – Board Appointment – Substance Use, Addiction and Mental Health Commission (SUAMC) and Juvenile Crime Prevention Council (JCPC):The Board unanimously appointed the following individuals to SUAMC for Districts 4 and 5, and the at-large re-appointment to the JCPC. The Board also unanimously approved the JCPC roster as required annually. 
    • JCPC At-Large Seat: Lavar Marlowe
    • SUAMC District 4: Samantha Hickman
    • SUAMC District 5: Jeremy Gunn
    • SUAMC Sheriff’s Office Representative: Acacia Alston
  2. Clerk to the Board – NCACC Voting Delegate Appointment: The Board unanimously designated Vice Chairman Mike Forte as the voting delegate at the 117th NCACC Annual Conference in Forsythe County in August 2024.

VIII. Other Business/Informal Discussion

  • The Board unanimously moved to require all Commissioner-appointed advisory boards and committees to compose minutes for all meetings and to require any individuals speaking at public comment to provide their name and address for the meeting record. 
  • The Board directed staff to bring the Commissioners a recommended list of possible needs and projects that could be supported with revenues currently dedicated for tourism advertisement purposes only. The Board would then review and consider requesting the NC General Assembly draft legislation to allow these revenues to be used for these new purposes.

Brunswick County Board of Commissioners hold regular meeting Monday, July 8

BOLIVIA, N.C. – The Brunswick County Board of Commissioners will meet for a regular meeting at 2 p.m. this Monday, July 8, 2024 (note earlier start time). The public is welcome to attend in person or watch live online via Zoom (details below).

The commissioners’ chambers are on the first floor of the David R. Sandifer Administration Building at 30 Government Center Drive in Bolivia (28422). 

This is the only regular Board of Commissioners meeting scheduled in July 2024.

Public Comment and Hearings

Most regular meetings include a time for public comment before the commissioners at the beginning of the meeting. Some meetings also have public hearings for specific issues. The public hearings are similar to a public comment period but pertain to one topic.

Individuals wishing to speak during a public hearing should sign up before the meeting starts on the form at the door dedicated to public hearings. This form is separate from the form used to sign up for public comments at the beginning of the meeting.

Speakers wishing to distribute any related documents, printed comments or materials to the commissioners should deliver at least eight copies to the county clerk at least fifteen minutes before the meeting starts.
