[ARCHIVED] Statement on Fire Incident Involving EMS Ambulance

MEDIA RELEASE / PUBLIC NOTICE

BOLIVIA, N.C. – Fire crews responded to a structure fire at 11:28 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 17 affecting Building C at the Brunswick County Government Center in Bolivia. Crews discovered heavy smoke from the garage section of the building where an ambulance with active fire was parked in an ambulance bay. Firefighters successfully suppressed the fire before additional spread could continue.

There were no reported injuries. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Only one ambulance was totaled due to the fire. Physical damages to the building are limited to the area surrounding the affected ambulance bay. The affected ambulance was not one of the newest ambulances that entered the County's EMS fleet in Fall 2025.

The overall building (including the garage, office space, and the emergency operations center) is considered structurally sound. Three different ambulances and two quick response vehicles (QRV) were also inside the garage during the incident, but no damages have been identified to those vehicles at this time.

Staff and a restoration contractor will be on site over the next few days to prepare for cleanup of the building and undamaged vehicles and to conduct additional inspections for any repair needs.

Brunswick County EMS wants to assure the public that this incident will not hinder the County’s ability to provide effective and quick emergency medical services. Brunswick County EMS operates a robust fleet with multiple ambulance stations placed countywide to ensure thorough and timely response to all types of emergencies.

Brunswick County is grateful to the Bolivia Volunteer Fire Department and mutual aid support from Fire Stations 4, 6, 13, 18, 37, as well as our EMS and law enforcement responders, for their quick and diligent work in responding to this emergency.

Brunswick County will share updates on this incident should new information arise.
