Public Notice of Discharge of Untreated Wastewater - Calabash

PUBLIC NOTICE

 

NOTICE OF DISCHARGE OF UNTREATED WASTEWATER

 

Brunswick County Public Utilities had a discharge of untreated wastewater from a damaged sewer line tap near 101 South Middleton Dr. Calabash, NC, on January 28th, 2026. The sanitary sewer overflow (SSO) was discovered at approximately 1:12 p.m. Staff from Brunswick County Public Utilities investigated the site and determined a two-inch sewer tap gate valve had failed. County staff began repairing the valve at approximately 1:30 p.m. and completed the repair at 2:15 p.m. on January 28th, 2026. It is believed approximately 34,650 gallons were discharged and reached the Little Cawcaw Swamp.  Downstream sampling and remediation of the affected site has been completed.  This notice is required by NC General Statutes Article 21 Chapter 143.215.1C.

 

No action is required by the public at this time. Additional information will be provided if action is necessary.
