MEDIA RELEASE

BOLIVIA, N.C. – Brunswick County Planning invites property owners in the former Southport Extraterritorial Planning Jurisdiction (ETJ) to attend an upcoming Community Open House for the initial zoning of the area on Thursday, July 25, at The Brunswick Center at Southport.

Planning staff will present details on what this initial zoning process means for affected residents and properties in the ETJ area at both 5:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. Community members may attend either presentation time, which is expected to last about 30 minutes.

Property owners in the former ETJ will also have an opportunity to share their input and ideas for the initial zoning of the area at the open house. Planning staff will consider this input when drafting map amendments to the Unified Development Ordinance, which will go to Planning Board in August for consideration.

In June 2024, the North Carolina General Assembly passed and ratified North Carolina House Bill 911, taking action to remove the Southport ETJ and place it under the jurisdiction of Brunswick County and the Brunswick County Planning Board effective July 1, 2024. Any changes or updates to the zoning regulations previously in place for the Southport ETJ area must be approved before Sept. 1, 2024.

Space and parking may be limited, so interested attendees are encouraged to attend one presentation time to ensure everyone has a chance to participate. A copy of the presentation and materials shared at the meeting will also be available online after July 25.

Individuals are also encouraged to reach out to our Planning team with any questions they have about the community open house.

Brunswick County and the City of Southport are coordinating to identify impacted projects and plan steps to transfer these projects to the County’s jurisdiction as seamlessly as possible. Until otherwise directed, all approved projects or projects currently in the application phase within the Southport ETJ area should continue to contact the City of Southport concerning any planning or permitting needs.
