MEDIA RELEASE

BOLIVIA, N.C. – The Brunswick County Board of Commissioners reconvened its special meeting at 1 p.m. and met for a regular meeting at 3 p.m. this Monday, Feb. 3, 2025.

The Board reconvened the Fiscal Year 2026 (FY26) Countywide Goals Workshop during the special meeting, which was recessed at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 21. During this workshop, departments presented an update on their latest accomplishments, opportunities, challenges, and tactics to support the commissioners’ goals in alignment with the FY23-FY27 Strategic Plan.

Below is a quick recap of the actions taken on selected agenda items during the regular meeting. Residents can view the full agenda and accompanying reports and subscribe to agenda notifications on the Brunswick County Agendas and Minutes Portal.

Brunswick County live streamed this meeting via Zoom and will post the meeting replay on the County’s YouTube channel. Individuals are invited to share feedback on the live stream quality and experience to the Communications Department via email.

The next regular meeting is scheduled for Monday, Feb. 17 at 6 p.m.

III. Adjustments/Approval of Agenda

The Board unanimously approved the agenda with the following adjustments:  

  • Removed Presentation Item No. 2 – Code Administration – Building Inspector of the Year Award, which will be included on a future meeting’s agenda. 
  • Added a Presentation for Chairman Mike Forte to present a ceremonial gavel to Commissioner Randy Thompson to recognize his years of service as Chairman of the Board.

V. Approval of Consent Agenda

The Board unanimously approved the consent agenda as presented. The full list of the approved consent agenda items is available on the Brunswick County Agendas and Minutes Portal

VI. Presentations

  1. Clerk to the Board – Gullah Geechee Heritage Trail Feasibility Study: The Board received a presentation from the Wilmington Urban Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (WMPO). No vote was taken. The presentation is available on the Brunswick County Agendas and Minutes Portal.
     
  2. Clerk to the Board – Presentation to Former Chairman Randy Thompson: Chairman Mike Forte presented a ceremonial gavel on behalf of the Commissioners to Commissioner Randy Thompson to recognize his four years of service as Chairman of the Board (2020-2024). No vote was taken.
  1. Utilities – Lead and Copper Program: The Board received the results from Public Utilities staff and contractor BlueConduit that Brunswick County Public Utilities (NC0410045) is recognized as a NON-LEAD system by statistical methodology report. No vote was taken. The presentation is available on the Brunswick County Agendas and Minutes Portal

VII. Administrative Report 

  1. County Attorney – Consideration of Proposed Text Amendment to Animal Control Ordinance: The Board unanimously denied adding the proposed text amendment to the Animal Control Ordinance.
     
  2. Sheriff’s Office – Design-Build Applied Criteria for APS Adoption Center Project: The Board approved (4-1) the design-build delivery method for the Sheriff's Office Animal Protective Services Adoption Center Project. (Yes: Forte, Cooke, Thompson, Williams; No: Sykes)

VIII. Board Appointments

  1. Clerk to the Board – Brunswick Business & Industry Development District 3: The Board unanimously appointed Randy Moffitt to the Brunswick Business and Industry Development Board as a District 3 representative.
     
  2. Clerk to the Board – Parks and Recreation District 1: The Board unanimously appointed Nora Finch to the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board as a District 1 representative.
     
  3. Clerk to the Board – Shallotte Planning Board ETJ Position: The Board tabled the decision to appoint an individual to the Shallotte Planning Board ETJ position.
     
  4. Clerk to the Board – Southeast Brunswick Sanitary District: The Board unanimously approved the appointment of Robert Jarvis to the Southeast Brunswick Sanitary District.
     
  5. Clerk to the Board – Sunset Beach Planning Board ETJ Position: The Board unanimously approved the appointment of Kevin Daugherty to the Sunset Beach Planning Board ETJ position.

BOLIVIA, N.C. – The Brunswick County Board of Commissioners will reconvene its special meeting beginning at 1 p.m. and hold a regular meeting at 3 p.m. this Monday, Feb. 3, 2025. The public is welcome to attend in person or watch live online via Zoom (details below).

The Board will reconvene the Fiscal Year 2026 (FY26) Countywide Goals Workshop during the special meeting, which was recessed at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 21. During this workshop, departments will present an update on their latest accomplishments, opportunities, challenges, and tactics to support the commissioners’ goals in alignment with the FY23-FY27 Strategic Plan.

Public Comment and Hearings

Most regular meetings include a time for public comment before the commissioners at the beginning of the meeting. Some meetings also have public hearings for specific issues. The public hearings are similar to a public comment period but pertain to one topic.

Individuals wishing to speak during a public hearing should sign up before the meeting starts on the form at the door dedicated to public hearings. This form is separate from the form used to sign up for public comments at the beginning of the meeting.

Speakers wishing to distribute any related documents, printed comments or materials to the commissioners should deliver at least eight copies to the county clerk at least fifteen minutes before the meeting starts.
