BOLIVIA, N.C. – The Brunswick County Board of Commissioners met for a regular meeting this Monday, Feb. 19, 2024.
Below is a quick recap of the actions taken on selected agenda items during the regular meeting. Residents can view the full agenda and accompanying reports and subscribe to agenda notifications on the Brunswick County Agenda and Minutes Portal.

III. Adjustments/Approval of Agenda
The Board of Commissioners unanimously moved to remove Administrative Report Item No. 2: Sheriff’s Office – Notice of Award and Agreement – Inmate Medical RFP from the agenda. The Board may consider this item at a future meeting.
V. Approval of Consent Agenda
The Board of Commissioners unanimously approved the consent agenda as presented. The full list of the approved consent agenda items is available on the Brunswick County Agenda and Minutes Portal.
VI. Presentations
- Clerk to the Board – Award Presentation from Veterans Experience Action Center: The Board accepted the award presented to the Board of Commissioners for the continued support of military veterans from the Veterans Experience Action Center (VEAP). No action was taken.
- Administration – Planning Updates – Tree Standard Overview and Unified Development Ordinance Update: The Board received a presentation from staff on potential Tree and Landscape Standards, as well as a UDO revision update and timeline. The presentation was informational in nature and no action was taken to change the UDO during this meeting. The full presentation is available on the Brunswick County Agenda and Minutes Portal.
While no action was taken on any changes to the UDO and tree and landscape standards, the Board took certain actions and gave staff direction as follows:
- Unanimously moved for staff to issue a request for qualifications for a consultant and to return at a future meeting to address the consultant’s role and duties if contracted.
- Unanimously moved for staff to draft a potential resolution requesting the NC General Assembly approve special legislation so Brunswick County may create a tree ordinance.
- Directed staff to gather feedback from the Planning Board and the Board of Commissioners on potential tool solutions and to work toward implementation of recommended tools through UDO amendments and/or special legislation. Staff will give an update on this topic at a future meeting and will also provide information on possibly moving the NCDOT Traffic Impact Analysis (TIA) to the beginning of the planning review process for project applications that meet the required thresholds.
VII. Administrative Report
- Sheriff's Office – Night Shift Differential – Consideration of Additional Eligible Shifts: The Board unanimously approved expanding the implementation of the Night Shift Differential of $2.50 per hour to employees assigned to the Sheriff's Office overnight patrol, overnight detention, and overnight 911 Communications shifts.

- Sheriff’s Office – Notice of Award and Agreement – Inmate Medical RFP: Request the Board of Commissioners award and approve the agreement with Wellpath LLC for the Sheriff's Office Detention Center Inmate Healthcare Services. The agreement is for a one-year term valued at $2,101,695.
Public Comment and Hearings
Most regular meetings include a time for public comment before the commissioners at the beginning of the meeting. Some meetings also have public hearings for specific issues. The public hearings are similar to a public comment period but pertain to one topic.
Individuals wishing to speak during a public hearing should sign up before the meeting starts on the form at the door dedicated to public hearings. This form is separate from the form used to sign up for public comments at the beginning of the meeting.
Speakers wishing to distribute any related documents, printed comments or materials to the commissioners should deliver at least eight copies to the county clerk at least fifteen minutes before the meeting starts.
