Here’s what you missed at the Nov. 20 Brunswick County Board of Commissioners meeting

BOLIVIA, N.C. – The Brunswick County Board of Commissioners met for a regular meeting this Monday, Nov. 20 at 6 p.m.

Below is a quick recap of the actions taken on selected agenda items during the regular meeting. Residents can view the full agenda and accompanying reports and subscribe to agenda notifications on the Brunswick County Agenda Portal at brunswickcountync.gov/agendas.

Brunswick County tested a live stream of this meeting via Zoom. This meeting was set up for live streaming only and was not recorded or archived. Individuals are invited to share feedback on the live stream quality and experience via email at communications@brunswickcountync.gov.

The next regular meeting is scheduled for Monday, Dec. 4 at 3 p.m. This will be the last scheduled Board of Commissioners meeting in 2023.

V. Consent Agenda

The Board of Commissioners unanimously approved (4-0) the consent agenda as presented. The full list of the approved consent agenda items is available on the Brunswick County Agenda Portal.

VI. Presentations

1. Cooperative Extension – 4-H Youth Voices Presentation: The Board of Commissioners received a presentation from 4-H regarding Youth Voices updates. No action was taken.

2. Public Utilities – NC ONE WATER Disaster Preparedness Award: The Board of Commissioners received the NC ONE WATER Disaster Preparedness Award from the North Carolina Chapter of the American Water Works Association and the North Carolina Water Environment Association (NC AWWA-WEA) presented to Brunswick County Public Utilities at the recent annual conference. No action was taken.

3. Public Utilities – NC ONE WATER Operators of the Year: The Board of Commissioners recognized John Gregory as the NC ONE WATER Collections System Operator of the Year and Ronnie Fulford as the NC ONE WATER Distribution Operator of the Year from the North Carolina Chapter of the American Water Works Association and the NC AWWA-WEA. No action was taken.

VII. Administrative Report

1. Code Administration – Approval of Interlocal Agreement for Floodplain Administration between Brunswick County and the Town of Navassa: The Board of Commissioners unanimously approved and authorized (4-0) Brunswick County to enter into an interlocal agreement for floodplain administration between the County and the Town of Navassa.

2. Communications – FY25 Strategic Planning and Goal Setting Workshop: The Board of Commissioners held a workshop to review the upcoming Fiscal Year 2025 (FY25) strategic planning and goal-setting process. The Commissioners provided feedback and comments on what they would like to see included or expanded on concerning tactics, key performance measurements, and reporting. No action was taken.

Public Comment and Hearings

Most regular meetings include a time for public comment before the commissioners at the beginning of the meeting. Some meetings also have public hearings for specific issues. The public hearings are similar to a public comment period but pertain to one topic.

Individuals wishing to speak during a public hearing should sign up before the meeting starts on the form at the door dedicated to public hearings. This form is separate from the form used to sign up for public comments at the beginning of the meeting.

Speakers wishing to distribute any related documents, printed comments or materials to the commissioners should deliver at least eight copies to the county clerk at least fifteen minutes before the meeting starts.
