Here’s what you missed at the Brunswick County Board of Commissioners May 2 FY23 budget workshop and regular meeting

MEDIA RELEASE

BOLIVIA, N.C. – The Brunswick County Board of Commissioners met for a budget workshop for the Fiscal Year 2023 preliminary budget beginning at 1 p.m. and for a regular meeting at 3 p.m. this Monday, May 2.

During the 1 p.m. budget workshop, the Board received a presentation from staff on the preliminary Fiscal Year 2023 recommended budget, fees, and capital improvement plan (general and enterprise funds). The Board of Commissioners recessed the workshop at 2:55 p.m. and continued it following the conclusion of the regular meeting. No action was taken during the workshop.

The official recommended budget will be presented to the Board during the upcoming May 16 regular meeting at 6 p.m. During the regular meeting on June 20 at 6 p.m., Brunswick County will hold a public hearing on the budget and the Board will consider adoption of the budget ordinance, capital improvement plan, and fees for FY23.

  1. Clerk to the Board – NCDOT Update Presentation: The Board of Commissioners heard a presentation from NCDOT Division Engineer Chad Kimes regarding projects and budgets. No action was taken. View the presentation under the agenda item here.
VII. Administrative Report
  1. Administration – ARPA Policies and Procedures Approval and Preliminary Funding Priorities: The Board of Commissioners unanimously approved the resolution adopting policies to aid in the expenditure of American Rescue Plan Act of 2021.

    No action was taken on the recommended funding priorities. The Board requested an additional workshop to discuss and take possible action on the priorities.

  2. Emergency Services – Governor’s Volunteer Service Award: The Board of Commissioners unanimously approved a resolution recognizing the recipients of the 2020, 2021, and 2022 Governor’s Volunteer Service Award.
  3. Tax Administration – Contract for Revaluation Vendor: The Board of Commissioners unanimously accepted the proposal from Piner Appraisal, Inc. to assist with the 2023 countywide revaluation. The contract will provide assistance in valuing commercial properties.

BOLIVIA, N.C. – The Brunswick County Board of Commissioners will meet for both a budget workshop at 1 p.m. and a regular meeting at 3 p.m. this Monday, May 2. The public is welcome to attend both meetings.

During the 1 p.m. budget workshop, the Board will receive a presentation from staff on the preliminary Fiscal Year 2023 recommended budget, fees, and capital improvement plan (general and enterprise funds).

Additionally, some meetings have public hearings for specific issues. The public hearings are similar to a public comment period but pertain to one topic. Individuals wishing to speak during a public hearing should sign up before the meeting starts on the form at the door dedicated to public hearings. This form is separate from the form used to sign up for public comments at the beginning of the meeting.

Speakers wishing to distribute any related documents, printed comments or materials to the commissioners should deliver at least eight copies to the county clerk at least fifteen minutes before the meeting starts.
