Here’s what you missed at the July 17 Brunswick County Board of Commissioners meeting

BOLIVIA, N.C. – The Brunswick County Board of Commissioners met for a regular meeting this Monday, July 17 at 6 p.m.
Below is a quick recap of the actions taken on selected agenda items during the regular meeting. Residents can view the full agenda and accompanying reports on the Brunswick County CivicClerk Agenda Portal at brunswickcountync.gov/agendas.
The next regular meeting is scheduled for Monday, August 7 at 3 p.m.

VI. Presentations
- Cooperative Extension – 4-H Youth Voices: The Board of Commissioners received a presentation from 4-H youth member Autumn Hatcher. No action was taken.
- Health Services – Presentation and Recognition of Health Services Team for Accreditation with Honors: The Board of Commissioners received a presentation of Health Services’ reaccreditation status with honors. No action was taken.
- Health Services – Presentation of Community Health Needs Assessment: The Board of Commissioners received a presentation of the 2022 Community Health Needs Assessment. No action was taken.
VII. Public Hearings
- Planning – Town of Ocean Isle Beach Extraterritorial Jurisdiction (ETJ) Expansion Request: The Board of Commissioners conducted a public hearing to receive comments on the Town of Ocean Isle Beach’s Extraterritorial Jurisdiction (ETJ) Expansion request. There were three requests to speak during the public hearing: a representative from the Town of Ocean Isle Beach and two of the property owners. The Board moved 4-0 to approve the Town of Ocean Isle Beach’s ETJ request.
VIII. Administrative Report
- Clerk to the Board – NCACC Voting Delegate: The Board of Commissioners unanimously designated (4-0) Commissioner Cooke as the voting delegate and Commissioner Forte as the alternate voting delegate to represent Brunswick County at the NCACC Annual Conference in Wake County.
- Engineering – Request for Two (2) Engineering Project Manager Positions: The Board of Commissioners unanimously approved (4-0) the addition of two new Engineering Project Manager positions, and the corresponding Budget Amendment.
The two new positions will help alleviate workload strains on the Engineering department by assisting with plan review and in-field inspections. The amendment appropriates $235,310 of miscellaneous revenues for the addition of two engineering project manager positions and related expenses.
IX. Board Appointments
- Clerk to the Board – 2023 Annual Board Appointments: The Board of Commissioners moved 4-0 to select and fill three of the remaining 2023 Board Appointments. The final seat on the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board is pending appointment. See full details on the Brunswick County Agenda Portal.
X. Other Business/Informal Discussions
- Commissioner Frank Williams noted wait times to get an appointment with Veteran Services since September 2022 has decreased from seven and a half weeks to four.
- Vice Chairman Mike Forte inquired about livestreaming future board meetings and what staff would need to accomplish this. Commissioner Williams made a request to staff to explore streaming software beyond Facebook Live. The Board unanimously moved (4-0) to have County staff investigate livestreaming the meetings. County Manager Steve Stone said staff will create a proposal for the Board’s review and consideration at a future meeting.

BOLIVIA, N.C. – The Brunswick County Board of Commissioners will meet this Monday, July 17 for a regular meeting at 6 p.m. The public is welcome to attend.

Public Comment and Hearings
Most regular meetings include a time for public comment before the commissioners at the beginning of the meeting. Some meetings also have public hearings for specific issues. The public hearings are similar to a public comment period but pertain to one topic.
Individuals wishing to speak during a public hearing should sign up before the meeting starts on the form at the door dedicated to public hearings. This form is separate from the form used to sign up for public comments at the beginning of the meeting.
Speakers wishing to distribute any related documents, printed comments or materials to the commissioners should deliver at least eight copies to the county clerk at least fifteen minutes before the meeting starts.
