Here’s what you missed at the Aug. 21 Brunswick County Board of Commissioners meeting

BOLIVIA, N.C. – The Brunswick County Board of Commissioners met for a regular meeting this Monday, Aug. 21 at 6 p.m.

Below is a quick recap of the actions taken on selected agenda items during the regular meeting. Residents can view the full agenda and accompanying reports on the Brunswick County Agenda Portal at brunswickcountync.gov/agendas.

The next regular meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 5 at 3 p.m. County offices are closed Monday, Sept. 4 to observe Labor Day.

VI. Presentations

1. Clerk to the Board – Resolution Honoring Leland Youth Baseball Division 1 Majors: The Board of Commissioners unanimously approved a resolution honoring the Leland Youth Baseball Division 1 Majors who won the Dixie Youth Baseball Division 1 Majors World Series Title.

2. Clerk to the Board – Resolution for Preparedness Month September 2023: The Board of Commissioners unanimously adopted the Preparedness Month resolution for September 2023.

3. Tax Office – 2023 Revaluation Update: The Board of Commissioners received a 2023 revaluation and collections update. No action was taken. The full presentation is available on the online Brunswick County Agenda Portal.

VII. Administrative Report

1. Utilities – Rice Creek 2023 Improvements Agreement: The Board of Commissioners unanimously approved a request from Brunswick-STU & Associates, LLC and Town Creek Land Partners, LLC to provide for public enterprise improvements ancillary to a large residential and commercial development to be served by a sewer transmission line along the Highway 17 bypass from Benton Road to Old Ocean Highway (north end).

VIII. Board Appointments

1. Clerk to the Board – Town of Shallotte ETJ Planning Board Appointments: The Board of Commissioners unanimously appointed Mr. David Barrett and Mr. Clay Schmelzer to the Planning Board for the Town of Shallotte as the Extraterritorial Jurisdiction (ETJ) appointees.

Public Comment and Hearings

Most regular meetings include a time for public comment before the commissioners at the beginning of the meeting. Some meetings also have public hearings for specific issues. The public hearings are similar to a public comment period but pertain to one topic.

Individuals wishing to speak during a public hearing should sign up before the meeting starts on the form at the door dedicated to public hearings. This form is separate from the form used to sign up for public comments at the beginning of the meeting.

Speakers wishing to distribute any related documents, printed comments or materials to the commissioners should deliver at least eight copies to the county clerk at least fifteen minutes before the meeting starts.
