Here’s what you missed at the Sept. 6 Brunswick County Board of Commissioners meeting

BOLIVIA, N.C. – The Brunswick County Board of Commissioners met for its regular meeting this Tuesday, Sept. 6 at 3 p.m.

Below is a quick recap of the actions taken on selected agenda items during the regular meeting. Residents can view an online and PDF version of the full agenda and accompanying reports at brunswickcountync.gov/agendas.

Below are a few selected items from the agenda that the Board of Commissioners will discuss and take possible action on during the regular meeting.

V. Approval of Consent Agenda (selected items)

The Board of Commissioners unanimously approved the consent agenda as presented. The following are selected items from the consent agenda.

  • Administration – Brunswick County Schools Contracts with Becker Morgan Group, Inc. and Barnhill Contracting Company for design and construction of North Brunswick High School Addition: The Board of Commissioners approved and authorized the Chairman to sign the Becker Morgan Group, Inc. design contract in the amount of $1,057,000 and the Construction Manager at Risk Barnhill Contracting Company construction contract in the amount of $22,274,068 for the North Brunswick High School Addition.
  • Library – Nonrecurring State Aid to Libraries: The Board of Commissioners approved the acceptance of Nonrecurring State Aid to Libraries for Brunswick County Library. The State Library of North Carolina received ARPA funding to distribute and each library system in NC is a beneficiary of those funds. Brunswick County is currently eligible for $89,046. As a beneficiary of these funds, Brunswick County Library can spend the funds on carpet replacement, landscaping improvements, staff salaries, and e-books among other pre-approved projects.
VI. Presentation
  1. Clerk to the Board – Emergency Preparedness Month: The Board of Commissioners unanimously approved and adopted the Emergency Preparedness Month Resolution.
VII. Administrative Report
  1. Administration – American Flood Coalition: The Board unanimously moved to become members of the American Flood Coalition (AFC). There is no cost of membership in the American Flood Coalition. It is a voluntary collaborative effort.
  2. Administration – City of Boiling Spring Lakes Dam Projects Funding: The Board unanimously approved the Interlocal Agreement with the City of Boiling Spring Lakes for the County to provide $3,000,000 to support the City’s dam restoration projects. On June 22 of this year the Board approved an appropriation of $3,000,000 to the City of Boiling Springs Lakes and authorized staff to develop an Interlocal Agreement with the City to provide the funding in increments of $750,000 in each of FY 24, 25, 26 and 27. The agreement contains provisions that would delay or withhold the funding each year if the project has not begun or is not making satisfactory progress. The attached agreement to implement the requested action has already been approved by the City and awaits approval by the Board.
  3. Administration – NCACC FY 23 Legislative Goals: The Board unanimously approved the draft goals for potential inclusion on the NCACC Legislative Goal Agenda with the addition of a federal goal that U.S. Congress does not support legislation that creates unfunded mandates for local governments and a revision to the second federal goal language to begin with “Seek legislation,” rather than “Request.”

BOLIVIA, N.C. – The Brunswick County Board of Commissioners will meet for its regular meeting this Tuesday, Sept. 6 at 3 p.m. The meeting will take place on a Tuesday since Brunswick County offices are closed in observance of Labor Day on Monday, Sept. 5.

The commissioners’ chambers are on the first floor of the David R. Sandifer Administration Building at 30 Government Center Drive in Bolivia (28422).

Additionally, some meetings have public hearings for specific issues. The public hearings are similar to a public comment period but pertain to one topic. Individuals wishing to speak during a public hearing should sign up before the meeting starts on the form at the door dedicated to public hearings. This form is separate from the form used to sign up for public comments at the beginning of the meeting.

Speakers wishing to distribute any related documents, printed comments or materials to the commissioners should deliver at least eight copies to the county clerk at least fifteen minutes before the meeting starts.
