Design for the upgrade and expansion of the Brunswick County Northwest Water Treatment Plant is nearing 50 percent completion. The County and it’s Engineer have finalized alternatives analysis and established ideal scope of improvements that meet the project objectives. Field work, including survey and geotechnical investigations, is substantially complete and has provided the necessary information to make informed design decisions.
As construction methods and locations of proposed work become more defined, environmental permitting requirements have been settled and planning efforts to secure them have increased. In addition, the current NPDES application for the concentrate discharge continues to advance through the review process and a draft of the permit is anticipated soon.
The next project milestone will be the submittal of 60 percent design documents at the end of April. These documents provide an opportunity for constructability and quality reviews, and planning for sequencing of construction activities within limitations necessary to maintain plant operations.
Completion of the final design remains on schedule for October with bids to be received by the end of the year. Construction is expected to commence in January of 2020 and the first distribution of water from treatment upgrades is expected in December 2021.
