MEDIA RELEASE

BOLIVIA, N.C. – Brunswick County is pleased to announce that Child Support Supervisor Sherri Sellars was awarded the North Carolina Child Support 2020 Employee of the Year Award from the North Carolina Child Support Council.

Sellars joined the Brunswick County Child Support Team as an agent in 2016 and was quickly promoted to supervisor the following year. Social Services and Public Housing Director Cathy Lytch remarked that Sellars stands out as she has a wealth of knowledge, dedication to the program, and the ability and flexibility to think outside the box to help the agency meet its goals.

“We are grateful every day that Sherri decided to join the Brunswick County team and that we have the opportunity to work alongside her,” Lytch said. “Without her knowledge, dedication, and support, I do not believe the Brunswick County Child Support program would have progressed as much as it has.”

Sellars has worked tirelessly to improve the function of the Child Support Team by improving customer service and by fostering relationships with the court, clerks, judges, attorneys, and community partners to reach their goals. Lytch said that Sellars’ willingness to partner and to be open to new ideas has pushed the department forward. She has worked to build relationships, implemented new programs, and made changes that have help to aide many families in Brunswick County.

This past year, Social Services partnered with the Bicycle Man Program, which is designed to support families and children by providing them with new and refurbished bicycles. Applications are accepted and reviewed and at the end of the year the annual Christmas bicycle giveaway donates hundreds of bicycles. Sellars nominated two families in Brunswick County. Seeing that the family was unable to pick up the bikes in Fayetteville, she arranged to pick up the bikes and arrived early to volunteer to help.

Sellars was recognized for her award and contributions to the team and community during the Brunswick County Board of Commissioners meeting Monday, Dec. 7.

The mission of the North Carolina Child Support Council is to foster communication, information exchange and education opportunities to support the diverse professionals in their efforts to provide the best services available for the children they champion.
