Vegetative, construction and demolition debris pick up from recent tornado begins March 8 for identified roads

Deadline to have debris sorted into two categories and at the curb is Monday at 8 a.m.

MEDIA RELEASE

BOLIVIA, N.C. – Starting Monday, March 8, 2021, the North Carolina Department of Transportation’s contractors will begin pickup of vegetation debris, like trees and limbs, in the areas affected by the tornado.

Brunswick County also plans to collect and dispose of any construction and demolition debris. The County will make only one pass, so residents must have their construction and demolition debris on the right of way by the deadline of Monday, March 8 at 8 a.m.

Residents should sort debris and leave it by the road for pick up. Residents should sort debris into two categories:

  1. Vegetative debris (leaves, logs, plants, tree branches – do not bag)
  2. Construction and demolition debris (building materials, carpet, drywall, furniture, lumber, mattresses, plumbing)

Debris should be placed in between the sidewalk/ditch and the road. Debris placed from the sidewalk toward your property will not be picked up.

Residents who do not have a sidewalk, ditch, or utility line in front of their home should place debris at the edge of their property near the curb or edge of the road. Placing debris near or on fire hydrants, water meters, trees, poles, or other structures makes removal difficult.

The affected roads identified for debris pick up are listed below:

  • Hwy 904 – from Hwy 17 to 746 Seaside Rd.
  • Hwy 17 – from Ocean Ridge to Green Bay Rd.
  • Old Shallotte Road – from Mintz Cemetery Rd to Green Bay Rd

Brunswick County Board of Commissioners take action concerning collection of construction and demolition debris along identified areas impacted by recent tornado, additional details to come

MEDIA RELEASE

BOLIVIA, N.C. – The Brunswick County Board of Commissioners unanimously authorized Brunswick County Tuesday to conduct curbside collection of construction and demolition debris from the recent tornado for residential properties along identified private roads dependent on the North Carolina Department of Transportation’s (NCDOT) agreement to collect the vegetative debris.

Brunswick County is currently in communication with its partners at the NCDOT about the department’s plans. Brunswick County will provide an update when more information is available concerning next steps for residential residents and which roads are identified for collection at https://www.brunswickcountync.gov/feb2021tornadodebris/

Over the past week, Brunswick County Operations, Emergency Services, and the County’s debris management contractors have completed assessments to identify areas with vegetative and construction and demolition debris caused by the tornado in the Grissettown area, including Ocean Ridge Plantation and surrounding neighborhoods and roads outside of the housing community.

The assessments consider debris on residential properties only. Commercial properties are encouraged to contact their insurance companies for questions about debris removal.

Construction and demolition debris (often referred to as C&D) includes items like treated wood, sheet rock, doors, windows, siding (aluminum and vinyl), and household appliances like washers, dryers, refrigerators, etc. These items will need to be sorted and separated from vegetative debris for any future curbside collection.

Individuals with questions about their debris can contact Brunswick County Operation Services at 910.253.2520.

The following roads in the Grissettown and Ocean Isle Beach areas were identified in the assessment for debris collection:

  • Old Shallotte Road – from Mintz Cemetery Rd to Green Bay Rd
  • Birchwood Rd
  • Green Bay Rd – from Old Shallotte Road to Hwy 17
