Medical Nutrition Therapy

Brunswick County Medical Nutrition Therapy

Brunswick County Health Services offers Medical Nutrition Therapy(MNT)by a registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN). MNT is a key component of our Diabetes Management Program. Nutrition-based treatment provided by the RDN includes a nutritional diagnosis as well as therapeutic and counseling services to help treat various medical conditions.

What is MNT?

Medical nutrition therapy (MNT) is an evidence-based, individualized nutrition process meant to help treat medical conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, cancer, kidney disease, and digestive issues. Our Registered Dietitian will:

  1. Provide a personal and comprehensive nutrition therapy service;
  2. Conduct an in-depth individualized nutrition assessment with you;
  3. Provide encouragement and education to help you meet your goals;
  4. Establish a care plan to manage and treat your condition and;
  5. Follow-up over multiple visits to assist with behavioral and lifestyle changes relative to your individual nutrition problems and medical condition or disease(s).
What to expect?

When you are referred for Medical Nutrition Therapy, a member from our health services team will reach out to you to schedule a time for you to meet with one of our dietitians to discuss the nutrition recommendations for your condition, as well as your needs, limitations, and preferences. The RDN will provide recommendations that are shown to be effective and safe in treating your condition, will work with you to develop goals, and will provide support to help you reach your goals.

Insurance and Medicare

Medicare and many insurance policies cover MNT. Medicaid covers MNT for pregnant women and children. Brunswick County Health Services can work with you and your insurance provider to determine if this is a covered service for your condition prior to your visit. Most insurance providers will not cover the cost of MNT unless a referral is made by a medical provider.

Referral Guidance for Medical Providers
