MEDIA RELEASE

BOLIVIA N.C.— Brunswick County will hold a free clean up week at the Brunswick County Landfill in Bolivia Oct. 10-15 for county residents and property owners to dispose of certain debris following Hurricane Ian. During this week, only storm-related construction and demolition debris and vegetative/yard debris is accepted at no charge.

Storm-related construction and demolition debris and vegetative/yard debris must be separated into different loads to be accepted at the Landfill.

All storm-related vegetative/yard debris items should be less than 4 feet long. Items longer than 4 feet may be subject to normal tipping fees.

Regular rates for household trash or other materials disposed at the Landfill during this week will still apply. This free cleanup week does not apply at Brunswick County convenience centers.

Individuals will need to show proof of Brunswick County property ownership or residency to drop off items for free. Businesses and commercial vehicles will still be charged normal tipping fees.

Important Note for Property Owners Associations

Property Owners Associations (POAs) using contracted haulers for debris clean up in their communities must contact Brunswick County Operation Services for verification before arriving at the Landfill.

Need to get rid of items now? County residents and property owners can bring yard waste to the Brunswick County Landfill or county convenience centers for associated fees during regular business hours.

Yard waste should not be placed in your household trash or recycling bins.

Brunswick County under Hurricane Warning due to Ian; County Offices Closed Friday

MEDIA RELEASE

BOLIVIA, N.C. – Brunswick County is currently under a Hurricane Warning ahead of Ian’s anticipated landfall along the South Carolina coast as a Category 1 hurricane on Friday.

Brunswick County is actively monitoring the storm with our municipal and state partners as well as the National Weather Service in Wilmington (NWS-Wilmington). Any updates from Brunswick County concerning Hurricane Ian will be found at brunswickcountync.gov/ian.

Brunswick County Offices Closed Friday

Brunswick County government offices and libraries are closed to the public Friday, Sept. 30. Essential staff will still report to work to assist with hurricane response efforts.

All Brunswick County Parks and Recreation programs have been canceled for the weekend. Participants should receive direct communication from the Parks and Recreation department with more details. Follow the Parks and Recreation social media channels for further updates.

Update: All curbside trash and recycling routes are cancelled Friday and are rescheduled for pick up Saturday, Oct. 1. Brunswick County convenience centers and landfill are closed Friday.

The Brunswick County Courthouse is closed Friday. Any necessary filings can be made at the alternate filing site, which is the magistrates office in the Brunswick County Detention Facility located at 70 Stamp Act Drive in Bolivia.

  • Update (Oct. 1): The Brunswick Nature Park (2601 River Road SE, Winnabow) and Shallotte District Park (5550 Main Street, Shallotte) are closed to the public due to debris from Hurricane Ian. County officials will keep the park closed until further notice.

BOLIVIA, N.C. – Brunswick County is currently under a Tropical Storm Warning, Flood Watch, and Tornado Watch, with a Storm Surge Warning in effect for coastal areas of the county due to Hurricane Ian.

As the hurricane continues inland, the Brunswick County area will still experience strong winds, heavy rains, storm surge, and potential tornado threats into the evening. Individuals are advised to continue to follow the latest weather updates from the National Weather Service in Wilmington (NWS-Wilmington).

“Brunswick County encourages residents and visitors to stay alert and remain off the roads today,” Emergency Services Director Ed Conrow said. “Many reports throughout the day have been related to storm surge, flooded roadways, fallen trees, and downed power lines, although it is too early to assess damages countywide. Brunswick County emergency staff continue to monitor the storm’s impacts and path.”

Roads may be flooded due to heavy rains or storm surge. Do not drive through flooded roads. Do not drive around any barricades put in place as roads may need to be inspected for safety.

Latest Updates from NWS-Wilmington

Update from Sept. 30, 2022, at 6 p.m. (final update)

  • Hurricane Ian made landfall around 2:05 p.m. near Georgetown, SC with 85mph winds, and is expected to weaken quickly through tonight as it moves inland. Ian is now a Post Tropical Storm with 70mph winds about 20 miles NW of Myrtle Beach as of 5 p.m.
  • While heavy rain and gusty winds are continuing over parts of the area, conditions should improve further through the evening.
  • Water levels will remain elevated through the next couple of high tide cycles, but not as severe as the high tide earlier today that led to substantial inundation in places.
  • The tornado threat has ended across the area.
  • Weekend weather looks favorable for storm recovery and clean-up efforts.
