Idalia Update: Brunswick County Urges Residents to Stay Alert, County Offices Operating on Normal Schedule Thursday

PUBLIC NOTICE

BOLIVIA, N.C. – Brunswick County continues to actively monitor Hurricane Idalia with our community partners and the National Weather Service in Wilmington (NWS-Wilmington). Brunswick County’s Emergency Operation Center is at Level 2 (Partial Activation) with representatives from multiple public safety agencies and other essential services.

At this time, Brunswick County plans to operate on its regular schedule tomorrow, Thursday, Aug. 31. All Brunswick County parks will close early at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 30, and plan to reopen at 8 a.m. Thursday. Any updates concerning Idalia or any changes to Brunswick County’s planned operations will be shared at brunswickcountync.gov/idalia.

Brunswick County is currently under a Tropical Storm Warning, Tornado Watch, and a Flood Watch countywide. A Coastal Flood Warning is also in effect. Brunswick County is at an Enhanced Risk (3 out of 5) for potential tornadoes.

According to NWS-Wilmington, impacts are beginning to increase across northeast South Carolina and southeast North Carolina as the bands of rain associated with Idalia move northward. The risk for tornadoes this afternoon and evening and flash flooding caused by heavy rains later today through Thursday are particularly high for our area. More impacts include:

  • Heavy rainfall and dangerous flash flooding
  • A few tornadoes and waterspouts
  • Some storm surge/coastal flooding
  • Gusty winds exceeding 40 mph (tropical storm force)
  • Strong rip currents and very rough surf
  • Hazardous maritime conditions

Community members are encouraged to stay aware and to have multiple ways to receive information about latest conditions. Click here to see the latest NWS-Wilmington weather updates.

Due to expected inclement weather from Idalia, all Thursday curbside GFL Environmental trash and recycling collection routes are rescheduled for pick up on Saturday, Sept. 2. There are no planned changes to Wednesday and Friday collection routes.

The Brunswick County Courthouse is closed Thursday, Aug. 31. Any necessary filings can be made at the alternate filing site, which is the magistrates office in the Brunswick County Detention Facility at 70 Stamp Act Drive in Bolivia.
