Brunswick County Finance Director Julie Miller retires after almost 20 years of service

Director of Fiscal Operations Julie Miller

BOLIVIA, N.C. – Brunswick County will say goodbye to one of its key leadership team members this month after nearly two decades of service to the organization and county.

“I am proud to have served the residents of Brunswick County,” said Julie Miller, who joined Brunswick County in 2002 and has served as director of fiscal operations since 2013. “Working in government financial management has given me a number of rewarding challenges and opportunities to grow. I am incredibly thankful to my team members for all their help and support over the years in achieving excellence in government.”

During her time with the County, Miller was instrumental in supporting its efforts to finance several major infrastructure projects, including ongoing projects like the Brunswick County Courthouse renovation and the Northwest Water Treatment Plant expansion and advanced water treatment upgrades.

The County was also awarded the certificate of achievement for excellence in financial reporting and the distinguished budget presentation award for its annual reports for nine consecutive years under Miller’s leadership. These awards, presented by the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada, are considered some of the most prestigious recognitions a local government can receive.

“We are exceptionally grateful and lucky to have had Julie on the County’s team,” County Manager Randell Woodruff said. “She conducts herself with the highest levels of integrity and hard work, and has left the County in a fiscally strong position. While we are sad to see Julie go, we commend her on an exceptional career and wish her the happiest of retirements.”

Along with overseeing the County’s financial budget process for each fiscal year in coordination with the county manager, Julie also supported the County through several emergency situations like the COVID-19 pandemic and hurricanes Florence, Matthew, and Isaias, requiring the administration and reporting of millions of dollars of assistance from FEMA and other state and federal sources.

The Brunswick County Commissioners recognized Miller’s service with a resolution during the Board’s annual meeting Dec. 6, 2021. Julie’s tenure will come to a close at the end of December, with current Deputy Finance Director Aaron Smith taking lead over the department in the new year.
