MEDIA RELEASE

BOLIVIA, N.C. – Brunswick County will close public shelter operations at Town Creek Middle School in Winnabow effective 3 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 8.

There were no community members using the shelter at the time the decision was made to close this public shelter.

Brunswick County Emergency Management continues to monitor Tropical Storm Debby and will assess if additional shelter needs are necessary in the future. Brunswick County is sharing information and updates at brunswickcountync.gov/debby.

Decisions on when to open and close a public shelter involve several partner agencies including Brunswick County Emergency Management, Brunswick County Health and Human Services, the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office, and Brunswick County Schools. These partners consider multiple factors such as current and future weather and flooding conditions, public safety concerns, how many occupants remain in an open shelter, and whether any remaining occupants have any alternative safe places to go.

For questions about shelters, contact Emergency Management at 910.253.5383 or email emergency.management@brunswickcountync.gov.

Information about public shelters can be found at brunswickcountync.gov/shelters.
