PUBLIC NOTICE

NOTICE OF DISCHARGE OF UNTREATED WASTEWATER

Brunswick County Public Utilities had a discharge of untreated wastewater from the Northeast Brunswick Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant, 10480 Royster Road, Leland, NC. The discharge was caused by lightning damage to the plant’s programmable logic controller (PLC) resulting in the operating system having a communications failure. Without the PLC functioning properly, the equalization basin overflowed for approximately 4 hours from 8:20 pm, 06.14.2025 to 12:20 am, 06.15.2025. The wastewater plant bypass was discovered at approximately 10:30 a.m. on 06.15.2025, after plant repairs were completed, during staff facility inspections.  It is believed approximately 60,000 gallons were discharged and reached the Cape Fear River, at a point near the I-140 River overpass.  Downstream sampling and determination of remedial needs were being conducted at the time of this Notice release.  This Notice is required by NC General Statutes Article 21 Chapter 143.215.1C.

No action is required by the public at this time. Additional information will be provided if action is necessary.
