PUBLIC NOTICE
NOTICE OF DISCHARGE OF UNTREATED WASTEWATER
Brunswick County Public Utilities had a discharge of untreated wastewater from damage to the collection system from construction activities near 6680 New Penny Ln, Ocean Isle Beach, NC, on March 19, 2025. The sanitary sewer overflow (SSO) was discovered at approximately 8:50 AM. Staff from Brunswick County Public Utilities investigated the site and determined damage to a low-pressure force main had occurred during an internet service line installation. County staff began repairing the force main at approximately 10:00 AM and completed the repair at 10:30 AM on March 19, 2025. It is believed approximately 2,600 gallons were discharged, 1,700 gallons were recovered and approximately 900 gallons reached a stormwater collection pond structure that is connected to a tributary of Saw Pit Swamp, classified as C:Sw surface water and is located within the Lumber River Basin (Stream Index # 15-25-2). Downstream sampling and remediation of the affected site has been completed. This notice is required by NC General Statutes Article 21 Chapter 143.215.1C.
No action is required by the public at this time. Additional information will be provided if action is necessary.
