NOTICE OF DISCHARGE OF UNTREATED WASTEWATER
Brunswick County Public Utilities had a discharge of untreated wastewater caused by a combination of 3.2 inches of rain over a 4-hour period and a King Tide flooding of the Bay Street pump station, temporarily overwhelming the collection system with rain and seawater. Multiple manholes were involved along Ninth, Burlington, Port Havenway, West, East and West Bay Streets, Southport, NC, on May 27, 2025. The sanitary sewer overflow (SSO) was discovered at approximately 10 p.m. Staff from Brunswick County Public Utilities investigated the site and determined the cause of the sanitary sewer system discharge. County staff responded with pump trucks to mitigate and monitor the situation until 1 a.m. (3 hrs.) when the surcharging of seawater from the Bay Street pump station and heavy rainfall subsided. The system then returned to normal operating conditions. It is believed approximately 17,280 gallons of untreated wastewater were discharged and reached the Cape Fear River along the waterfront of Southport. This notice is required by NC General Statutes Article 21 Chapter 143.215.1C.
No action is required by the public at this time. Additional information will be provided if action is necessary.
