PUBLIC NOTICE

NOTICE OF DISCHARGE OF UNTREATED WASTEWATER

Brunswick County Public Utilities had a discharge of untreated wastewater from the Shallotte Wastewater Treatment Plant near 349 Forest St. Extension, Shallotte, NC, on January 28, 2026. The Plant discharge (SSO) was discovered at approximately 9:00 p.m. Staff from Brunswick County Public Utilities investigated the site and determined the plant had experienced an instrument control panel malfunction. County staff began repairing the control panel at approximately 9:00 p.m. and completed the repair at 10:00 p.m. on January 28, 2026. It is believed approximately 15,000 gallons were discharged and reached Woodward Branch, a tributary of the Shallotte River.  Downstream sampling and remediation of the affected site has been completed.  This notice is required by NC General Statutes Article 21 Chapter 143.215.1C.

No action is required by the public at this time. Additional information will be provided if action is necessary.
