Transportation Planning
Transportation is considered the movement of people and goods and includes a variety of modes such as road networks, ferries, rail lines, bike/pedestrian routes, public transportation, and airports. Roads in Brunswick County are classified as either state roads, municipal roads, or private roads. Brunswick County does not own, build, or maintain roads, per NC state statues. County taxes do not go to support road maintenance or construction. The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) owns and maintains most major roadways in unincorporated Brunswick County. The Planning Department’s transportation planning goals include 1) Assist in education about the transportation planning process and related projects/initiatives AND 2) Advocate for an efficient multi-modal transportation system that will meet the needs of our growing County. State Road Transportation Planning is facilitated by NCDOT with the support of three regional transportation planning organizations – the Wilmington Metropolitan Planning Organization (WMPO), the Grand Strands Area Transportation Study Metropolitan Planning Organization (GSATS MPO), and the Cape Fear Rural Transportation Planning Organization (CFRPO).
