Transportation is considered the movement of people and goods and includes a variety of modes such as road networks, ferries, rail lines, bike/pedestrian routes, public transportation, and airports. Roads in Brunswick County are classified as either state roads, municipal roads, or private roads. Brunswick County does not own, build, or maintain roads, per NC state statues. County taxes do not go to support road maintenance or construction. The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) owns and maintains most major roadways in unincorporated Brunswick County.
