The WMPO Wants to Hear From the Public How They Adapted During the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge Preservation Project Lane Closures

WILMINGTON, N.C. – As of May 9, 2024, all lanes are now open on the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge but during the closures which started in January drivers experienced increased traffic congestion across the Wilmington region. In light of the completion of NCDOT’s Cape Fear Memorial Bridge preservation project, the Wilmington Urban Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (WMPO) has released a short survey to discover how travel behavior changed during the project.

The WMPO worked with area employers and its members to promote information and support for alternative transportation strategies to reduce traffic congestion during the project. The WMPO also partnered with Wave Transit and NCDOT on providing expanded RideMICRO service in northern Brunswick County for connection to downtown Wilmington, as well as a marketing campaign to promote alternative transportation strategies to offset traffic congestion. These strategies included carpooling, teleworking and alternative work schedules, public transit, bicycling, and walking.

The WMPO would like to assess the impact of marketing and supporting these strategies during the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge preservation project to better understand how the effort was received and utilized by the public, and to inform future transportation marketing strategies.

Tell us how you adapted to traffic conditions caused by the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge lane closures! The survey will be available through May 24, 2024.
