Brunswick County Public Utilities had a discharge of untreated wastewater from a broken 12” sewer force main 8148 W. Ocean Highway, Sunset Beach, NC, on July 5, 2024. The sanitary sewer overflow (SSO) was discovered at approximately 11:54 AM. County staff isolated the force main at 1:00PM to begin repairs, which are ongoing. Staff are investigating the cause of the failure which has yet to be determined.
It is believed approximately 90-100,000 gallons were discharged and reached the Little Cawcaw Swamp. Downstream sampling and remediation of the affected site is ongoing via collection by vacuum trucks. This notice is required by NC General Statutes Article 21 Chapter 143.215.1C.
No action is required by the public at this time. Additional information will be provided if action is necessary.
