[ARCHIVED] Brunswick County remains closed Friday, Jan. 24 due to winter weather conditions

BOLIVIA, N.C. – Brunswick County Government will remain closed to the public Friday, Jan. 24, 2025, due to winter weather conditions. All Brunswick County Government offices, health clinic, social services, and other facilities (with the exception of libraries) will reopen on their regular schedules Monday, Jan. 27 unless additional closures or schedule changes become necessary. 

Brunswick County libraries will reopen on their regular schedules Saturday, Jan. 25 unless conditions warrant additional closures. Library patrons will not be charged overdue fees while the libraries are closed for weather-related events. Overdue fees will resume once regular schedules resume. 

All Brunswick County parks will remain closed until further notice. All Parks and Recreation youth programs are canceled until Monday, Jan. 27. 

If any appointments with Brunswick County Health Services are interrupted by needed closures, contact Health Services to reschedule. Health Services will assist with re-scheduling appointments as soon as possible.

GFL Environmental plans to open the Convenience Centers at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 24 and will open them on regular schedules Saturday, Jan. 25. The Brunswick County Landfill will remain closed Friday and will reopen on its regular schedule Saturday, Jan. 25 unless conditions warrant additional closures.  

Due to the expected freezing temperatures and road conditions on Friday, GFL Environmental will not collect curbside trash and recycling carts on Friday, Jan. 24 for the safety of their crews. 

The expected impacts and recovery dates for curbside trash and recycling customers affected by this week’s winter weather is as follows:

  • Wednesday Customers: GFL will now pick up Wednesday trash and recycling carts on Saturday, Jan. 25.
  • Thursday Customers: GFL will not collect trash and recycling carts on Thursday, Jan. 23. GFL will recover all trash and recycling from Thursday customers during their next regular collection day on Thursday, Jan. 30. GFL anticipates that these customers will have more trash and recycling than usual next week. Customers may leave extra bags securely near their cart for pick up.   • Friday Customers: GFL will not collect trash and recycling carts on Friday, Jan. 24. GFL will recover all trash and recycling from Friday customers during their next regular collection day on Friday, Jan. 31. GFL anticipates that these customers will have more trash and recycling than usual next week. Customers may leave extra bags securely near their cart for pick up. GFL Environmental is monitoring the weather conditions and will provide updates should any more changes to the curbside collection schedule become necessary. Those with questions about their cart collections should contact GFL Environmental at 910.253.4177.

Brunswick Senior Resources, Inc. (BSRI) locations will be closed to the public Jan. 22 through Jan. 24 due to weather and road conditions. BSRI staff will be working remotely and available for urgent matters. All five locations plan to reopen on Monday, Jan. 27. For updates, check the BSRI Facebook page

Essential staff responding to the inclement weather event will still work as scheduled to help monitor and respond to community needs and public safety.

Brunswick County leadership and emergency management staff are monitoring weather conditions and will communicate any changes with the public and staff should conditions require additional changes to this modified schedule.

The Brunswick County Emergency Operations Center is currently at Level 2 (Partial Activation), with essential public safety and response staff monitoring and responding to the inclement weather event. Brunswick County is sharing information and updates regarding the winter weather conditions for the week of Jan. 20-24, 2025, online at brunswickcountync.gov.

BOLIVIA, N.C. – Brunswick County Government will remain closed to the public Thursday, Jan. 23, 2025, due to ongoing and projected winter weather conditions. All Brunswick County parks remain closed until further notice. All Brunswick County Government offices, libraries, health clinic, social services, and other facilities will reopen on their regular schedules Friday, Jan. 24 unless additional closures or schedule changes become necessary.

Hazardous Driving Conditions Persist into Thursday

Hazardous driving conditions will continue through at least Thursday morning as limited melting occurs Wednesday, and any melting refreezing Wednesday night. Any accumulations of snow/sleet could result in hazardous driving conditions. 

NCDOT crews are working around the clock in respond to this weather event. If drivers see crews brining or plowing roadways, please give them space to work.

Individuals are encouraged stay indoors and avoid driving when possible. If you must travel, remember to follow these safety tips: 

  • Scrape off snow or ice and defrost windows;
  • Slow down and leave plenty of room between you and other vehicles; and
  • Be alert to shaded spots and bridges, as they freeze first.

Brunswick County closed Wednesday, Jan. 22 due to inclement winter weather conditions

BOLIVIA, N.C. – Brunswick County Government will be closed Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2025, due to the inclement weather conditions projected for Tuesday evening through Wednesday. All Brunswick County Government offices, libraries, parks, health clinic, social services, and other facilities will reopen on their regular schedules Thursday, Jan. 23 unless additional closures or schedule changes become necessary.

Brunswick County has canceled the Board of Commissioners regular meeting originally scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 21 due to inclement weather. The County will announce a new meeting date at a later time. The Board of Commissioners special meeting that began at 9 a.m. was recessed at 4 p.m. Tuesday and will reconvene Monday, Feb. 3 at 1 p.m.

The Brunswick County Landfill will close at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 21 and will remain closed through Wednesday, Jan. 22. The Brunswick County Convenience Centers will be closed Wednesday. 

Update (Jan. 22): Due to winter weather conditions, Wednesday curbside trash and recycling cart customers will now receive pick up service on Saturday, Jan. 25, 2025. GFL Environmental is monitoring the storm and will provide updates should any more changes to this week’s curbside collection schedule become necessary. Brunswick County closes libraries and parks early Tuesday, Jan. 21 due to inclement weather

Board of Commissioners meeting canceled

MEDIA RELEASE

BOLIVIA, N.C. – All Brunswick County Government offices, libraries, and other facilities will close at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2025, due to the inclement weather conditions projected for Tuesday evening.

All Brunswick County parks will close at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 21 until further notice due to inclement weather. All youth basketball programs will be cancelled beginning Tuesday, Jan. 21 through Thursday, Jan. 23.

Brunswick County has canceled the Board of Commissioners regular meeting originally scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 21 due to inclement weather. The County will announce a new meeting date at a later time.

The special Board of Commissioners meeting scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. Tuesday will continue as scheduled at this time. The Board will hold the annual FY 2026 Countywide Goals Workshop during this special meeting.

The Brunswick County Landfill and Convenience Centers are currently operating on regular schedules. GFL Environmental still plans to collect curbside trash and recycling carts as scheduled on Tuesday. GFL Environmental will open on a delayed schedule on Wednesday, Jan. 22 at 8 a.m. to assess road conditions. Those with questions about their cart collections should contact GFL Environmental at 910.253.4177.

Staff will continue to assess conditions to determine if additional closures or schedule changes become necessary. Any additional changes to Brunswick County operations will be posted at brunswickcountync.gov.
