NCDOT Transportation Projects

NC-211 Southport-Supply

One of Brunswick County's top transportation priorities is the widening of NC 211 (Southport-Supply Road) to four lanes from NC 87 (River Road) in Southport to U.S. 17 (Ocean Highway) in Supply. This highway project has been divided into four separate projects:

  1. R-5021: NC 87 (River Road) to NC 906 (Midway Road). Includes an interchange at the intersection of NC 211 and NC 906 and at NC 211 and Long Beach Road Construction began in January 2022 to widen a 7.2-mile stretch of NC 211 from two lanes to four lanes from Midway Road to NC 87 (PDF) in Brunswick County. Widening this part of NC. 211 would help improve traffic flow, improve driver safety, and traffic capacity, and provide a safer evacuation route. Work is anticipated to be completed by spring 2026. See more information.
  2. R-5947: NC 906 (Midway Road) to SR 1112 (Sunset Harbor Road). This project is in the 10-year State Transportation Improvement Program (STIP) but is not currently funded.
  3. U-5932: NC 211 Interchange (NC 211 at U.S. 17). Currently, this is a committed project but funding is not fully secured. A timeframe for moving forward has not been established.
  4. HO90806-A: NC 211 from Sunset Harbor Road to U.S. 17. Currently, this project is not funded and not in the STIP, but has been submitted by Brunswick County for future prioritization.

The Brunswick County - NC 211 Project Map (PDF) drafted and provided by NCDOT describes each project segment and provides milestones. This project information is subject to change as projects are funded and then considered to be a "committed project". View NCDOT's live STIP project map.

Carolina Bays Parkway Extension Project

R-5876 (NC STIP) and P029554 (SC STIP): The North Carolina and South Carolina Departments of Transportation (NCDOT and SCDOT) are planning to extend the Carolina Bays Parkway (SC 31) from SC 9 in Horry County, South Carolina, across the North Carolina state line to U.S. 17 in Brunswick County (near Shallotte). This project is expected to involve a multi-lane expressway that might involve existing roadways and areas on new locations. The extension would provide a more direct and efficient movement of traffic seeking to bypass congestion within the areas of Calabash, NC as well as Little River and the Grand Strand areas in South Carolina. As a result, local and tourist traffic on area roadways would experience less congestion and delays.

The draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) is anticipated in spring/summer 2022. The preferred route will be selected and proposed by a Merger Team made up of Federal and State officials (NC and SC) but will not be finalized until after a public hearing (anticipated in summer/fall 2022). The public will be able to provide comments at the public hearing. Route selection is still in the process of being finalized.

The NCDOT 2019-2029 STIP includes funding for planning and environmental studies only for this project. The project is currently not funded for right-of-way acquisition or construction. View the study area (PDF).
